Step back in time to **Lincoln Railway Station in the 1980s**, when British Rail diesels, first-generation DMUs, semaphore signals and traditional railway infrastructure were still part of everyday life.
In this video, we explore Lincoln Central during a fascinating period of change. We'll look back at the trains and locomotives you could have seen, including **Class 31s, Class 37s, Class 47s, Class 08 shunters and the familiar Class 114 diesel multiple units**.
We'll also discover how Lincoln became such an important railway crossroads, with trains heading towards Newark, Nottingham, Sleaford, Gainsborough, Doncaster, Market Rasen, Grimsby and Cleethorpes.
The 1980s brought enormous changes to Lincoln's railway. **Lincoln St Marks closed in 1985**, passenger services were concentrated at Central, and the railway landscape around the city gradually became simpler.
But what was Lincoln Central really like during the British Rail years? Was it as dark, smoky and gloomy as some stations of the period, or did Lincoln somehow manage to retain more of its Victorian character?
And who remembers those diesel fumes? Class 31s rumbling away, first-generation DMUs rattling beneath the platforms, semaphore signals changing and trains crossing straight over Lincoln High Street – it's amazing how different the railway once felt.
Today the historic station survives, but much around it has changed.
