Crewe in the 2000s – The Final Years of Class 87s and the Arrival of the Pendolino
Step back in time to Crewe Railway Station during the 2000s, a fascinating period when Britain's railways were changing before our eyes.
At the beginning of the decade, Crewe was still a wonderful place to see traditional locomotive-hauled passenger trains. Class 87s and Class 90s could be found on West Coast expresses, while Class 47s remained associated with trains heading towards North Wales. Add freight locomotives, Sprinters and other regional trains, and Crewe was an incredible place for railway enthusiasts.
But change was coming quickly.
The arrival of the Class 390 Pendolino and Class 220 and 221 Voyagers transformed the railway. Within only a few years, many of the locomotive-hauled passenger trains that had been part of everyday life at Crewe were disappearing.
We take a nostalgic journey back to the 2000s to remember the trains, locomotives and atmosphere of this famous railway junction, while also looking at how Crewe station has changed since then.
Do you miss the railways of the early 2000s? Did you prefer the Class 87s and locomotive-hauled trains, or were the Pendolinos and Voyagers a welcome sign of progress?
