Peterborough Railway Station in the 1990s – When British Rail Ruled the East Coast Main Line
Step back in time to Peterborough Railway Station in the 1990s, when British Rail was still very much part of everyday railway life and the East Coast Main Line was packed with an incredible variety of trains.
Peterborough was one of the great places for railway enthusiasts. High-speed InterCity 125 HSTs thundered through alongside the increasingly dominant InterCity 225s, while Classes 90 and 91 could be seen on long-distance passenger workings. Away from the main line, diesel locomotives and multiple units worked the regional services, and freight added even more variety.
The 1990s were also a decade of enormous change. British Rail's familiar sector identities gradually gave way to privatisation and a collection of new operators and liveries. Peterborough therefore provided a fascinating mixture of the old railway and the new.
Join us as we return to Peterborough in the 1990s and remember the sights, sounds and atmosphere of one of Britain's busiest railway junctions. From screaming HST power cars to electric InterCity expresses and rumbling freight trains, there was rarely a dull moment.
How much do you remember about Peterborough in the 1990s? What was your favourite locomotive or train to see here? And do you think the railway was more interesting then than it is today?
