Pure 3,300 HP Deltic Symphony! Class 55 Number D9015 Tulyar Erupting With a Full Throttle Departure
Constructed by English Electric at the historic Vulcan Foundry in Newton-le-Willows, Lancashire in 1961 (works number EE2907/VF3040, entering service on 13th October 1961 at Finsbury Park depot and later renumbered under TOPS as 55015), D9015 is a celebrated 65-year-old Co-Co express passenger locomotive owned and maintained by the Deltic Preservation Society (DPS). At the heart of this legendary machine lies a pair of opposed-piston, triangular-configured Napier Deltic D18-25B 18-cylinder two-stroke diesel engines, combining to unleash a staggering 3,300 hp (2,460 kW) at 1,500 rpm. Weighing in at 101 tonnes (99.4 imperial tons) in working order and driving six axle-hung English Electric traction motors, the locomotive produces a maximum starting tractive effort of 50,000 lbf (222 kN) and a designed mainline top speed of 100 mph (160 km/h), backed by an onboard fuel capacity of 4,090 litres (900 imperial gallons). Following a monumental, painstaking 29-year overhaul that returned the racehorse to passenger service, D9015 is presented in truly immaculate early-1960s British Railways two-tone green livery. The scheme showcases deep Sherwood green lower bodyside skirts beneath rich dark olive-green body panels, pristine white cab window surrounds, and authentic traditional all-green nose ends without yellow warning panels. Flanked by gleaming cast bodyside nameplates reading Tulyar—honouring the Aga Khan’s immortal 1952 Epsom Derby-winning thoroughbred—the locomotive embodies the pinnacle of British Railways East Coast Main Line express motive power.
Rolling Stock: 6-Coach British Rail Mark 1 Passenger Rake
Marshalled directly behind the Deltic's trailing nose is an authentic 6-coach rake of classic British Rail Mark 1 passenger carriages, turned out in a colourful heritage mix of traditional 1950s Carmine and Cream ("Blood and Custard") and 1970s BR Corporate Blue & Grey liveries. Coupled in meticulous sequential order, the rake is led immediately behind the locomotive by E4857, followed down the train by E24421, E9316, E5007, buffet dining car M1962, and brought to a close by corridor brake second M25711 on the rear. Tipping the scales at roughly 210 tonnes of trailing passenger accommodation, this 6-car rake was rostered for a high-speed express working, booked to run fast and direct straight through to Rothley in true mainline express style, without any intermediate calls scheduled along the route.
Leicester North Departure: Storming the Incline on the Non-Stop Express to Rothley
Seen in 8K 16:9 widescreen working the 11:25 express passenger service booked non-stop straight to Rothley during the Great Central Railway's Autumn Diesel Gala, Class 55 Deltic No. D9015 (Tulyar) stages a spine-tingling departure from Leicester North station on a warm and sunny autumn morning on Saturday, 5th of September 2026 at 11:31. With the road cleared for a fast through run straight to Rothley, the driver notches wide open, bringing both 18-cylinder Napier Deltic two-stroke power plants into full song to produce an ear-splitting, metallic crescendo that echoes throughout the cutting. Digging its six driven axles firmly into the track, the 65-year-old racehorse storms the stiff 1-in-176 rising gradient climbing out of Leicester North platform, hurling twin plumes of blue-grey exhaust high into the September sky as coaches E4857 through to M25711 sweep past in an exhilarating showcase of authentic Napier express power.
