Steam Returns to Carlisle; LNER Diversions and More! 26 September 2026

SAturday 26th September 2026 and at last, after the steam ban and it being lifted, a steam-hauled charter visits Carlisle - and it wasn't by West Coast Railways! West Coast's Northern Belle to Edinburgh was diesel hauled, but The Great Northern charter from Birmingham saw Tornado appear, unassisted over the Settle Carlisle line but with its support Class 47 accompanying it back to Birmingham via the Tyne Valley.
We are also in the second Saturday of the ESML diversions during engineering works north of Newcastle. Good old LNER has been running weekend diversions utilising its bu-mode Class 800 Azumas.

The usual freight too with Class 90s and 88 plus the regular passenger trains from Avanti, TransPennine and Northern.
