Cardiff Central in the 1980s | When British Rail Ruled the Rails
Step back in time to Cardiff Central Railway Station in the 1980s, when British Rail filled the platforms with roaring diesel locomotives, InterCity 125s, first-generation diesel multiple units and trains heading across Wales and beyond.
In this video, we explore the fascinating history of Cardiff Central, how it became one of the most important railway stations in Wales, and the incredible variety of trains you could see during the 1980s.
We remember Class 37s, Class 47s, HSTs, the busy Valley services and the unmistakable atmosphere of a large British Rail station — complete with slamming doors, whistles, noisy engines and, of course, plenty of diesel fumes!
We’ll also compare Cardiff Central in the 1980s with the station today. Despite enormous changes to the railway, much of its wonderful Great Western character remains instantly recognisable.
But which would you prefer — the cleaner, quieter and more modern Cardiff Central of today, or the noisy, smoky and wonderfully varied British Rail station of the 1980s?
Let us know your memories in the comments.
