Didcot Parkway – When British Rail Ruled the Great Western Main Line
Step back in time to **Didcot Parkway Station in the 1990s**, when the Great Western Main Line was alive with the sights and sounds of British Rail.
In this video, we return to an era of screaming Valenta-powered InterCity 125s, Class 47s, heavy freight trains, Network SouthEast services and the then-new Class 165 and 166 Turbo units.
Didcot was a fascinating place for railway enthusiasts. Sitting at the junction of the Great Western Main Line and the railway towards Oxford, it offered an incredible variety of passenger and freight traffic. Nearby, the enormous Didcot Power Station dominated the skyline, with coal trains adding even more interest to an already busy railway location.
We look back at the trains you could have seen, the atmosphere of the station, the transition from British Rail to privatisation and just how much Didcot Parkway has changed since the 1990s.
Would you recognise Didcot today? And would you rather have today's modern railway, or return to the days of HSTs, locomotive-hauled trains and British Rail?
