Tamworth Railway Station – When Virgin Trains Ruled the Main Lines
Step back to **Tamworth Railway Station in the 2000s**, one of the most fascinating locations on Britain's railway network.
Tamworth is unusual because two major railway lines cross at different levels. Down below is the mighty **West Coast Main Line**, while high above is the railway linking Birmingham with Derby and the North East.
During the early 2000s, this was a brilliant place to witness the railway changing.
Class 87 and Class 90 electric locomotives could still be seen working Virgin West Coast services, while upstairs Virgin CrossCountry brought HSTs, Class 47s and traditional coaching stock through the station.
But everything was about to change.
The arrival of the **Class 390 Pendolino** transformed the West Coast Main Line, while the new **Class 220 and 221 Voyagers** rapidly replaced much of Virgin CrossCountry's traditional locomotive-hauled fleet.
Add Class 66-hauled freight trains, engineering workings and the enormous West Coast modernisation programme, and Tamworth became a fantastic place to watch the old railway give way to the new.
Join us as we return to **Tamworth in the 2000s**, when two great main lines crossed — and Britain's railway was changing before our eyes.
