Paris Gare du Nord in the 1990s – Eurostar Arrives!
Step back to Paris Gare du Nord in 1994, one of the most important years in the history of this magnificent railway station.
Gare du Nord was already one of Europe's great railway gateways, packed with suburban trains, long-distance services and international expresses heading towards Belgium, the Netherlands and beyond. But in 1994, something extraordinary was about to change railway travel between Britain and France forever.
The Channel Tunnel opened, and the first Eurostar passenger services began operating between London and Paris.
In this video, we return to Gare du Nord at this fascinating moment in railway history. We'll look at the trains and locomotives you could see, the international services using the station, the enormous suburban operation and the atmosphere beneath its magnificent train shed.
We'll also discover just how different Gare du Nord was in 1994 compared with today.
For railway enthusiasts, 1994 was a remarkable year — traditional European railway travel was still very much alive, but the new generation of international high-speed rail had arrived.
If you remember Gare du Nord during the 1990s, travelled through the station or experienced the early Eurostar services, we'd love to hear your memories in the comments.
