Ashford International 1994 – British Rail Before Eurostar Changed Everything
Step back to **1994** and visit **Ashford International Railway Station** at one of the most fascinating moments in its history.
British Rail and Network SouthEast were still part of everyday railway life, classic slam-door electric trains could still be seen across Kent, and Ashford remained one of the region's great railway crossroads.
But everything was about to change.
The Channel Tunnel opened in May 1994, Eurostar services began later that year, and Ashford was being transformed into an international station capable of handling trains between Britain and continental Europe.
In this video, we travel back to Ashford in 1994 to remember the trains, the atmosphere and the enormous changes taking place around the station. From Classes 411, 421 and 423 to the newer Networkers and diesel trains working towards Hastings, there was plenty of variety for railway enthusiasts.
We also look at how Ashford changed from a traditional British Rail station into Ashford International, and compare the railway of 1994 with the station we know today.
