Leicester Station in the Early 2000s – When HSTs Ruled the Midland Main Line
Step back to **Leicester Station in the early 2000s**, when the Midland Main Line was still dominated by diesel traction and the legendary InterCity 125 was an everyday sight.
In this video, we return to a fascinating period of transition on Britain's railways. Midland Mainline HSTs could still be seen and heard powering through Leicester on services between London St Pancras and the East Midlands, while a newer generation of trains was beginning to appear.
Class 170 Turbostars brought a more modern look to the railway, while from 2004 the Class 222 Meridians began another major change to Midland Main Line services.
Leicester was also an important station for services across the Midlands, with Central Trains bringing its own colourful collection of diesel multiple units through the station.
Add passing freight trains, Class 66 locomotives, traditional station architecture and the unmistakable sound of diesel engines beneath the canopies, and Leicester was a great place to experience Britain's railway in the early years of the 21st century.
Looking back today, scenes that once seemed completely ordinary have become railway history. Midland Mainline and Central Trains have disappeared, the trains and liveries have changed, and Leicester has continued to evolve.
Join me as we travel back just over twenty years to remember **Leicester Station in the early 2000s**.
