Northwich 1992 & 1997 | A Changing Railway at Oakleigh & the Cheshire Triangle
A short journey back to Northwich in the 1990s, filmed first in March 1992 and then revisited five years later in 1997.
The film opens with a couple of views of a **Class 101 DMU** arriving at and departing Northwich station before moving to the footbridge overlooking the famous **triangle of railway lines**. Although the area could already look somewhat quiet and neglected, the railway remained very much in use – albeit with freight traffic becoming increasingly sparse.
In 1992, the camera catches the infamous **47299** working a southbound freight through the triangle, providing a fine example of the mixed diesel freight workings still to be found around Northwich at the time.
Returning in 1997, the film takes a brief look at the increasingly run-down **Oakleigh Sidings**, once an important railway marshalling and freight facility in the Winnington area. From there, we return to the railway triangle and see a **northbound freight** passing through – a reminder that despite the quiet atmosphere, these lines were still very much part of the working railway.
Filmed five years apart, the two visits provide a fascinating glimpse of a railway in transition, capturing both the surviving freight activity and the signs of decline around Northwich's once-important railway infrastructure.
