Description
British Rail Class 27 No. 27056 in BR Blue with Bodyside Stripe
Constructed by the Birmingham Railway Carriage and Wagon Company (BRCW) at Smethwick, West Midlands in July 1962 (works number DEL244, entering traffic on 14th July 1962 as D5401 as the final member of the 69-strong Class 27 fleet, TOPS-renumbered 27112 in 1974, and re-entering service as 27056 in 1982), 27056 is a 64-year-old Bo-Bo mixed-traffic diesel-electric locomotive preserved and based at the Great Central Railway. Powered by a 6-cylinder Sulzer 6LDA28-B in-line turbocharged four-stroke diesel engine developing 1,250 hp (932 kW) at 750 rpm, the locomotive drives four GEC WT459 DC traction motors through an AEI DC generator. Operating with an all-up service weight of 73.7 tonnes (72.5 long tons), the locomotive generates a maximum starting tractive effort of 42,000 lbf (187 kN), a continuous tractive effort of 25,000 lbf (111 kN), an operational top speed of 90 mph (145 km/h), and carries an onboard fuel capacity of 3,110 litres (685 imperial gallons). Locomotive 27056 is immaculately presented in authentic 1980s British Rail Corporate Blue livery with full high-visibility yellow warning ends, black cab window framing, and a distinctive off-white bodyside waistline band, faithfully recreating its historic November 1983 Royal Train appearance when it hauled the Prince of Wales to Greenock.

British Rail Mark 1 6-Coach Maroon Passenger Rake
Coupled directly behind the locomotive in sequential order is a six-coach rake of preserved British Rail Mark 1 passenger stock, uniformly presented in classic lined British Railways Maroon livery. The formation consists of Corridor Second (SK) No. M25366 (built at Derby in 1956), Corridor Second (SK) No. E25312 (built at Swindon in 1957), Tourist Standard Open (TSO) No. M4948 (built at York in 1962), Tourist Standard Open (TSO) No. W4758 (built at York in 1957), Gangwayed Full Brake (BG) No. M81382 (built by Pressed Steel in 1957), and Tourist Standard Open (TSO) No. E4982 (built at Doncaster in 1962).

Thundering Up the Cutting from Leicester North on the 10:25 Service
Seen in 8K 16:9 widescreen departing Leicester North station on Saturday, 5th of September 2026 at 10:30, Class 27 No. 27056 takes charge of the 10:25 passenger service to Loughborough Central during the Great Central Railway's Autumn Diesel Gala. Working solo against the stiff climbing gradient through the deep cutting, the 64-year-old BRCW Type 2 is captured in an astonishing display of raw diesel power, opening up to full throttle to haul the heavy six-coach Mark 1 maroon rake. Digging into the rails as the 1,250 hp Sulzer 6LDA28-B power unit roars at maximum revs, 27056 creates a thunderous racket and absolute thrash that reverberates violently off the cutting sides and echoes across the Leicestershire countryside on a glorious sunny autumn morning.
