Pontypool & Blaenavon Railway - Steam Gala Weekend 2018
Taff Vale 85 made a return to Wales for the first time in over 90 years, having mostly been residing at it's current railway residence, the Keighley and Worth Valley Railway. This tank engine was the big star of the event, and she performed very well on the railway. I was given permission by the driver to look around inside the cab of Taff Vale too.
Joining Taff Vale for the event were 1742 'Millom' from the Buckinghamshire Railway Centre, newly acquired loco 3061 'Empress' from the Mangapps Farm Railway Museum, and 'Rosyth' No. 1 from the home fleet.
The only steam locomotive that was not in this year's steam gala event was Austerity 71515 'Mech Navvies.' The loco had unfortunately failed before the event, and so 'The Mog' was unable to take part with the other steam engines.
'Empress', which was just recently bought by the Blaenavon Railway for its home fleet, had its first run during the steam gala, and it pretty much filled in the empty space for 'The Mog'.
Overall, the steam gala weekend was a fantastic event, and the sounds of diesel were silenced for the weekend with the sounds of steam and whistles. 'Millom' will be staying at the Blaenavon Railway up until Christmas, and 'Empress' is now part of the railway's running home fleet engines.
