The South Wales Locomotive Festival - Friday 3rd May, 2024

Description
Yesterday saw one of the busiest days for loco haulage on the South Wales mainline, with no less than 13 locomotives seen in action, with 12 diesel engines and 1 steam engine all seen in one day, along with the modern electric-powered Hitachi Bullet Trains running in-between, creating a steam, diesel and electric running day variety on Friday 3rd May, 2024.

In the steam category, SR West Country 34046 'Braunton' was seen running from Crewe H.S to St Philips Marsh H.S.T.D in preparation for the 'English Riviera Express' railtour on the following day, where it would take over the train at Taunton for the run to Kingswear. This was filmed at Pontypool & New Inn railway station.

In the diesel category, 12 locos were seen throughout the day, ranging from around 8x Class 66s, 2x Class 67s, 1x Class 59 and 1x Class 33, which is the most loco-haulage seen at Newport (South Wales) in quite a long time.

In the electric category, the Hitachi Bullet Trains mainly occupied the express passenger runs, with at least three Hitachi bullets seen in one shot during the course of the day, providing the unique opportunity to see three in one.

There were two main highlights of the day at Newport.

The first highlight was the appearance of the London Transport 4TC set making a rare appearance into South Wales, where 59005 & 33012 were running the Branch Line Society charter 'Return of the Shedi' from Eastleigh to Cardiff Central, with the 59 and 33 combination running the last leg of the tour from Gloucester to Cardiff. 33012 would then lead the charter back through Newport and run as far as Bristol Parkway, where another loco would take over. The Aggregates Class 59 took me by great surprise, as its not every day you get to see one of those make a run into South Wales.

The second highlight was the amazing three trains in one shot moment that happened just before the railtour came back through. DVT 82216 & 67012 were first seen leaving Newport on the Manchester to Cardiff express run, where by the tunnels, a top and tailed freight ran by 66506 & 66508 was waiting for an open path into Platform 2. During that, 66589 snuck up from behind with a second freight train heading towards the tunnel. Both freight trains pass each other as 66506 & 66508 then proceeded with their freight train coming out of the tunnel.

Overall, this was probably the biggest locomotive festival that I have ever seen at Newport (South Wales), and with the day having steam, diesel and electric seen all in one day, it's definitely going to be a day I'm never going to forget anytime soon.
