STEAM IS BACK! π GWR 4150 & 75069 at the Severn Valley Railway!
Following the recent Autumn Diesel Gala, steam was back on the Severn Valley Railway, and I couldnβt miss the opportunity to travel behind the magnificent GWR Large Prairie No. 4150! ππ¨
Our visit begins at Kidderminster Town, where we capture the dayβs railway action before boarding 4150 for a fantastic journey through the Severn Valley to Highley.
After spending some time at Highley capturing more steam and diesel action, we make our return journey to Kidderminster aboard the heritage Class 101 DMU.
With two steam locomotives and two classic diesel types operating, there was plenty to enjoy!
π LOCOMOTIVES FEATURED
π΄ GWR LARGE PRAIRIE No. 4150 (1947)
Built at Swindon in 1947, 4150 is a GWR 5101 Class 2-6-2T tank locomotive designed for suburban passenger, semi-fast and freight duties.
Originally allocated to Stourbridge, it later worked across the Western Region, including at Newton Abbot, Taunton and Weymouth. Its final duties involved banking trains through the Severn Tunnel before withdrawal in 1965.
Rescued from Barry scrapyard in 1973, 4150 arrived at the SVR in January 1978. Following decades of restoration, this magnificent locomotive has finally returned to steam after more than 60 years!
Travelling behind 4150 was undoubtedly the highlight of our visit!
β« BR STANDARD 4MT No. 75069 (1955)
Built at Swindon in 1955, 75069 is a BR Standard Class 4 4-6-0 designed by Robert Riddles.
Originally built for the Southern Region, it worked from depots including Dover Marine, Nine Elms and Eastleigh before withdrawal in 1966.
Saved from Barry scrapyard in 1973, it returned to steam in 1984 and became a regular performer on the SVR and main line railtours. Following another major overhaul, it returned to service in 2018.
π’ BR CLASS 101 DMU (1950s)
Built by Metro-Cammell between 1956 and 1959, the Class 101 became one of Britainβs most recognisable first-generation diesel multiple units.
These units operated local and regional services across Britain, with the final examples remaining in passenger service until 2003.
The SVRβs three-car Class 101 joined the railway in 2024 and comprises vehicles 50170, 50253 and 59303.
We enjoyed our return journey from Highley to Kidderminster aboard this classic DMU!
