East Coast Main Line Views - XC Super Voyager
Unlike the west coast main line which only just gets a very brief glimpse of the actual coastline and sea in its 400 miles (at Hest Bank near Carnforth), the east coast main line has a number of stretches north of Newcastle through the borders and into Scotland which give great views of the coastline and the north sea. Some of these are seen in this video along with some of the landmarks.
This was taken on 28th September, the first day of running on the line towards Newcastle since the Friday due it being closed at the weekend for an engineering possession. The train itself was 1V62 the 1205 Cross Country working from Edinburgh Waverley to Plymouth, made up of a 9 car train, a 4 car class 220 voyager leading (220022) and a 5 car class 221 âsuperâ voyager (221127) on the rear. Both units were âunrefurbishedâ examples but were not in bad order from what I experienced.
The 9 car set had worked up to Edinburgh through the morning from Birmingham. The whole journey southbound would have an arrival time in Plymouth of just before 2100 that evening (actually slightly later in the event). This working was very civilised and wasnât âpackedâ and it was an enjoyable run south.
This video was taken from towards the rear of 221127.
Locations include the areas of Dunbar, Cockburnspath, Eyemouth, Berwick Upon Tweed (crossing the royal border bridge) Alnwick and then departing from Newcastle over the King Edward Bridge and towards Low Fell Junction.
