Description
The recent lifting of travel restrictions in South Wales came at just about the right time for us to see all of the trains that are featured in this video, as well as being the perfect video to put all of these trains into an Easter Special film for Easter Sunday 2021. ^^

In this short little movie, I’ve put together all of the trains that were filmed within the week on both the Welsh Marches mainline and the South Wales mainline, which includes rare loco appearances and unexpected movements that were filmed from March 27th to April 3rd, 2021.

Main Highlights

Rare Class 73 Appearance in South Wales
GBRf 73964 ‘Jeanette’ makes a very rare appearance on the Welsh Marches mainline, heading from Westbury Down T.C to Chester. It is very unusual to see a Class 73 in South Wales, when they’re usually working at Tonbridge Yards in Kent.

Locomotive Services Private Charter
The Private Charter, which was ran by Locomotive Services, had started on April 2nd with Black 5 45321 ‘Sherwood Forrester’ leading the train with D8107 (20107) coupled behind the tender for assistance. Originally, the Black 5 was scheduled to take the Vale of Glamorgan line on April 3rd, presumably for a water stop at Cogan, while taking the train from Carmarthen to Gloucester, where 2x Class 37s would take over the train for the run from Gloucester to Bristol Temple Meads.

Unfortunately, on April 2nd, while running on the Heart of Wales line going from Crewe to Carmarthen, an incident happened at Llandeilo, with the Black 5 being reported as a failure, having a flat spot problem on one of its tender wheels, which held the charter train up for hours, before D8107 eventually brought the train down to Carmarthen at 01:08am.

As a result of the extremely late arrival at Carmarthen, the charter train had to change their original running plans, with the crews needing to rest for 12 hours in addition. Cancelling their planned run through the Vale of Glamorgan line and up to Gloucester, the Private Charter left Carmarthen at 14:08pm, taking the South Wales mainline through Pontyclun.

The Class 37s (37688 & 37667) were sent down from Crewe to Pengam Sidings in response to the failed Black 5 incident, where they would took over the charter train from D8107 at Newport (South Wales), which eventually finished the run to Bristol Temple Meads, while D8107 went back up to Crewe, via the Welsh Marches.

This Easter has proven to be a very interesting one for the rails of Wales.
