Cardiff Central 20+ Years Ago – HSTs, Voyagers & Classic Welsh Railways
Step back in time to Cardiff Central Station in the early 2000s, when Britain's railway was going through a fascinating period of change.
In this video, we return to the Welsh capital to see Cardiff Central during an era of First Great Western InterCity 125s, Wales & Borders Sprinters and Virgin CrossCountry services.
The early 2000s were an especially interesting time on Britain's railway. Many trains inherited from British Rail were still hard at work, while new operators, new liveries and a new generation of trains were beginning to transform the scene.
At Cardiff Central, the legendary InterCity 125 remained a familiar sight on services towards London Paddington, while Class 150s, 153s and 158s worked local and regional trains across Wales and the South Wales Valleys. Virgin CrossCountry was also changing rapidly, as traditional locomotive-hauled trains gave way to the new Voyager fleet.
What seemed like an ordinary day on the railway at the time has now become a fascinating piece of railway history.
Join me as we travel back more than twenty years and remember Cardiff Central in the early 2000s.
