TRAINS at GRANTHAM. Class 99 'Flakes', Horn Salutes, ECML Action & 1978 Memories! 07/07/26

🚆 A return to Grantham after almost five decades... and it didn't disappoint!

Join me at Grantham Station on Tuesday 7th July 2026, where I spent the morning (08:20–11:30) filming one of the UK's most iconic locations on the East Coast Main Line.

This visit was particularly special. Although I've travelled through Grantham many times over the years, this was the first time I'd stood on these platforms since 1978, when I was just 12 years old. Back then I spent hours watching Deltics, HSTs and Class 47s thunder through, taking nameplate rubbings using wallpaper and wax crayons. Standing in almost the same spot again and watching today's high-speed trains sweep around the famous southbound curve brought back some fantastic memories.

The day also featured major disruption across the East Coast Main Line, with power supply issues north of London King's Cross causing cancellations, delays and altered services. Despite the disruption, Grantham still delivered an outstanding variety of passenger and freight traffic.

One of the biggest highlights came when GBRF Class 99 No. 99005—nicknamed a "Flake" by many enthusiasts—powered through on 4D30, giving a fantastic chorus of horns as it passed through the station. A huge thank you to the driver for making the day even more memorable!
