Why Is This Loco the Wrong Shape?

Britain's only Co-Bo diesel was so unreliable the entire class was sent back to its makers. Twenty were built. Barely eleven years later, all but one had gone.
The problem child of the 1955 Modernisation Plan, in 100 seconds: from Metropolitan-Vickers' Bowesfield Works in 1958 to the sole survivor, D5705, under restoration at the East Lancashire Railway today. The unique Co-Bo wheel arrangement — one three-axle bogie, one two-axle — the troublesome Crossley two-stroke engine, the vibration that shook the cab windows loose, the overnight London–Glasgow "Condor" express freight worked in pairs, the humbling recall of the whole fleet to Metrovick, exile to the Cumbrian coast, and total withdrawal by 1968. Plus BoCo — the Thomas & Friends engine the Co-Bo inspired.
Twenty built. One left.
