BR Blue Class 27 Number 27056 Heavy Mineral Train Action! Sulzer Power Hauling Heavy Freight
Constructed by the Birmingham Railway Carriage and Wagon Company at Smethwick, the 64-year-old Class 27 diesel locomotive 27056 was built in 1962. Powered by a Sulzer 6LDA28B 6-cylinder inline turbocharged diesel engine generating 1,250 hp (932 kW) with a maximum operating speed of 90 mph (145 km/h), this popular BRCW Type 2 delivers exceptional haulage capacity. Turned out in classic British Rail Blue livery complete with a distinctive lower body white stripe and full yellow cab ends, 27056 features dual air-and-vacuum braking systems and classic heritage locomotive detailing.
HAULED STOCK: 16 Mineral Wagons & 3 Goods Brake Vans
Forming a heavy heritage freight demonstration consist, the working features sixteen 16-ton steel mineral wagons marshalled between three preserved goods brake vans. Coupled directly behind locomotive 27056 is London Midland Region 20-ton brake van M730562. Following the rake of 16 mineral wagons, the train is brought up at the rear by British Railways 20-ton Standard brake vans B954268 (built at Darlington in 1958) and B954546 (built at Darlington in 1959 featuring air-brake yellow panels) trailing at the very end. Recreating authentic 1960s and 1970s heavy industrial railfreight operations from British Railways' transition era, this impressive rake demonstrates the heavy coal and mineral haulage duties typical of Class 27 locomotives during their operational service.
Demonstration Freight Working at Rothley Cutting
Captured in 8K 16:9 widescreen on a beautiful, sunlit autumn afternoon on Saturday, 5th of September 2026 at 12:53, the Class 27 is seen emerging from under the station road bridge arches and proceeding through the cutting towards Rothley station on the Great Central Railway's double-track main line, heading southbound from Loughborough Central towards the southern terminus at Leicester North.
Operating during the annual Autumn Diesel Gala, this train ran as an unadvertised demonstration freight movement. Demonstration goods and mineral runs simulate historical heavy railfreight operations and run to working timetable (WTT) gala instructions rather than the published public passenger timetable, explaining why the working was omitted from public schedules.
