Description
LEADING LOCOMOTIVE: GWR 5700 Class 0-6-0PT No. 7714
Constructed by Sir W.G. Armstrong Whitworth & Co. at Scotswood Works in Newcastle upon Tyne, the 96-year-old 5700 Class pannier tank locomotive 7714 was built in 1930 under Great Western Railway (GWR) order. Designed by Charles Collett as a versatile short-haul passenger and heavy shunting locomotive, this 0-6-0PT is powered by two inside 17.5″ x 26″ cylinders driving 4′ 7.5″ driving wheels operating with a boiler pressure of 200 psi, generating 22,515 lbf of starting tractive effort and approximately 700 horsepower. Owned by the Severn Valley Railway Pannier Tank Fund and turned out in BR unlined black livery with the early British Railways lion-and-wheel crest, 7714 handles the gala cross-valley passenger working.

HAULED STOCK: 1 BR Lined Maroon Mark 1 & 4 BR Blue Mark 1 Coaches
Forming a 5-carriage mixed-livery passenger rake on the East Lancashire Railway, the coaches are marshalled directly behind pannier tank 7714 in exact numerical sequence starting with BR Mark 1 TSO No. M4937 in lined BR maroon livery, built in 1962 (64 years old) at BR Doncaster Works in South Yorkshire. Following M4937 are four coaches finished in BR Blue and Grey livery: BR Mark 1 SK No. M4933, built in 1962 (64 years old) at BR Wolverhampton Works in the West Midlands; BR Mark 1 FK No. M14019, built in 1956 (70 years old) at BR Swindon Works in Wiltshire; BR Mark 1 RMB No. W1833 Miniature Buffet, built in 1957 (69 years old) at BR Doncaster Works in South Yorkshire; and BR Mark 1 SK No. M4866 bringing up the rear, built in 1959 (67 years old) at BR Doncaster Works in South Yorkshire.

Wet & Sunny Gala Departure from Bury Bolton Street to Heywood
Captured in 8K 16:9 widescreen on a wet yet brightly sunlit autumn afternoon on Friday, 16th of October 2026 at 12:46, GWR 5700 Class No. 7714 departs Bury Bolton Street station in Greater Manchester. Operating during the East Lancashire Railway Autumn Steam Gala on the 11:20 passenger service from Rawtenstall through to Heywood, the Western Region tank engine delivers a lively performance.

Just prior to starting, 7714 opens its cylinder cocks, venting dramatic jets of condensate steam onto the trackbed around the driving wheels. Moving off directly in front of lined maroon coach M4937, the pannier tank makes plenty of rich steam sounds and billows thick white exhaust into the autumn air under the bright, damp glint. The hard-working locomotive gathers speed across the station layout, powering its 5-coach formation southward towards Skelpit Junction and onward to Heywood.
