Spectacular Steam & Smoke! 116-Year-Old LMS Pug Number 11243 Saddle Tank Hauls The Brake Van Special
Constructed by the Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway (L&YR) at Horwich Works in Lancashire, the 116-year-old Class 21 four-wheeled saddle tank locomotive No. 11243 was built in November 1910 (originally designed by Sir John Aspinall and built under George Hughes). Designed specifically for negotiating tight-radius industrial dockland curves, this compact 0-4-0ST is powered by two outside 13″ x 18″ cylinders driving 3′ 0.5″ wheels operating with a boiler pressure of 180 psi, generating a remarkable 12,740 lbf of starting tractive effort and approximately 350 horsepower. Turned out in LMS unlined black livery, this historic four-wheeled Lancashire 'Pug' handles the special autumn gala brake van working.
HAULED STOCK: Southern Railway 'Queen Mary' Brake Van & BR Standard 20-Ton Brake Van
Forming a specialized goods brake van special on the East Lancashire Railway, the train features a pairing of two historic guards vans finished in standard British Railways bauxite (reddish-brown) freight livery. Marshalled directly behind the bunker of No. 11243 is a Southern Railway 'Queen Mary' bogie goods brake van, built in 1936 (90 years old) at Southern Railway's Lancing Works in West Sussex. Trailing directly behind the Queen Mary van is a British Railways Standard 20-ton brake van, built in 1954 (72 years old) at BR's Faverdale Works in Darlington, County Durham, providing authentic heritage freight train operation across the line.
Thunderous Ascent Past Burrs Country Park Towards Ramsbottom
Captured in 8K 16:9 widescreen on an atmospheric and steamy autumn afternoon on Friday, 16th of October 2026 at 15:25, L&YR Class 21 'Pug' No. 11243 works the 15:00 brake van special from Bury Bolton Street to Ramsbottom and return. Viewed from the elevated vantage point of Burrs Country Park overlooking Burrs station, the tiny four-wheeled saddle tank puts on a spectacular display.
Thundering up the gradient heading north towards Ramsbottom, No. 11243 works exceptionally hard, with thick clouds of white steam and dark smoke billowing everywhere into the damp autumn air. With the large bauxite Southern Railway Queen Mary bogie brake van and the trailing British Railways standard 20-ton van rumbling closely behind in tow, the diminutive pug delivers an unforgettable audio-visual performance on the climb out of Burrs.
