106-Year-Old LSWR S15 Class Number 30506! Powerfully Steaming on The ELR's Autumn Steam Gala
Constructed by the London and South Western Railway (LSWR) at Eastleigh Works in Hampshire, the 106-year-old S15 class steam locomotive 30506 was built in October 1920 (originally numbered LSWR 506). Designed by Robert Urie as a heavy express goods engine, this powerful 4-6-0 locomotive features two outside 21″ x 28″ cylinders driving 5′ 7″ driving wheels, a boiler pressure of 180 psi, and generates 28,200 lbf of starting tractive effort. Known colloquially as "Chawton" during its preservation era on the Mid-Hants Railway (Watercress Line) and owned by the Urie Locomotive Society, 30506 is turned out in BR lined black livery and remains a classic heavy-haul southern steam engine.
HAULED STOCK: 1 L&Y Directors Saloon & 5 BR Maroon Mark 1 Coaches
Forming a picturesque 6-carriage passenger working on the East Lancashire Railway, the locomotive is seen hauling the Lancashire & Yorkshire Railway Directors Saloon No. 1 marshalled directly behind the tender. Built in 1906 at Newton Heath Works, this luxurious vintage saloon carriage features large observation end windows and rich mahogany interiors. Following the Directors Saloon is a rake of 5 British Railways Mark 1 passenger coaches finished in traditional BR maroon livery.
Autumn Steam Gala Working Northbound at Irwell Vale Station
Captured in 8K 16:9 widescreen on a bright, sunny autumn morning on Friday, 16th of October 2026, LSWR S15 Class No. 30506 is recorded steaming powerfully through Irwell Vale station in Lancashire. Operating during the opening day of the East Lancashire Railway Autumn Steam Gala on the 09:25 service from Bury Bolton Street to Rawtenstall, the 106-year-old 4-6-0 blasts northbound at speed through the scenic Rossendale Valley.
As 30506 accelerates past the rural platforms of Irwell Vale as part of the intensive gala timetable, the locomotive lays down immense power, echoing rich exhaust beats and plenty of steam sound across the picturesque valley as it leads its mixed vintage rake toward Rawtenstall.
