89001 “The Avocet” – Achievement Re-run at Springs Branch | 07th October 2026

The unique and very special prototype electric locomotive class 89 89001 named "Avocat" but fondly nicknamed "Badger"is seen speeding north along the west coast main line and through Springs Branch south of Wigan on the morning of Wednesday 07th October 2026.

The class 89 was working a second run aka second attempt of The Avocet Achievement Tour run by (Inter-City) from Crewe to Glasgow Central. This originally ran on Tuesday 18th August 2026 where it only reached Warrington and the 89 was declared a failure so 90001 took the train to Carlisle and back.

The train today was running 1 late in some morning sunshine which certainly made filming much harder.

This Class 89 (89001)
nicknamed "The Badger" is a unique prototype electric locomotive built in 1986 by BREL at Crewe Works. Designed for high-speed trials on the East Coast and West Coast Main Lines, it was recently restored to mainline operational status.
