Description
Step back into the 1980s with this collection of silent cine film capturing British Rail in the days of classic diesel traction, from busy main-line stations and trainspotting outings to a memorable railtour in 1988.

Compiled from two reels of original cine film, this video brings together a varied selection of railway scenes, journeys and locations from an era when the familiar blue and grey liveries of British Rail were still part of everyday railway life.

REEL ONE – STATIONS, JOURNEYS & TRAINSPOTTING

The footage begins at Edinburgh Waverley, with Class 47/7 locomotives working Glasgow services, before an HST journey south takes us via Newcastle to Birmingham New Street.

Further scenes at London Liverpool Street feature Class 37 and Class 47 locomotives, before the action returns to Birmingham New Street for a busy Saturday of trainspotting. Here, crowded platforms provide the setting for more classic traction, including Class 50 locomotives, a Class 45 Peak and a final sequence showing a light engine Class 50 backing onto its train.

REEL TWO – THE 1988 RAILTOUR

The second reel follows a railtour in 1988, with views from the train behind Class 45 Peak 45128 as it passes Brewery Sidings in Manchester. Further footage captures the journey from inside the coach and the detachment of 45128 at Stockport.

The route continues past the distinctive signalboxes at West Cheshire Junction and Stanlow and Thornton, followed by a short sequence around Birkenhead Docks. The film concludes with a Class 03 diesel shunter stabled at the depot at the far end of the dock road.

From busy city termini to industrial docklands, this footage offers a fascinating glimpse of British Rail operations during the final years of the traditional diesel era.
