Description
LEADING LOCOMOTIVE: SR Maunsell Urie S15 Class 4-6-0 No. 30506
Constructed by the Southern Railway (SR) at Eastleigh Works in Hampshire, the 106-year-old S15 Class heavy freight locomotive No. 30506 was built in 1920 (originally ordered under the London and South Western Railway under Robert Urie's design). Known as the "Goods Arthur" for its heavy freight capabilities derived from the N15 passenger class, this 4-6-0 is powered by two outside 21″ x 28″ cylinders driving 5′ 7″ driving wheels operating with a boiler pressure of 180 psi, generating 28,200 lbf of starting tractive effort and approximately 1,500 horsepower. Preserved by the Urie Locomotive Society and turned out in BR unlined black livery with the early British Railways lion-and-wheel crest, 30506 leads the heavy multi-locomotive gala passenger working running tender-first.

BANKING LOCOMOTIVE: SR Bulleid Battle of Britain Class 4-6-2 No. 34092 'City of Wells'
Constructed by the Southern Railway (SR) at Brighton Works in East Sussex, the 77-year-old Battle of Britain Class Light Pacific locomotive No. 34092 City of Wells was built in 1949 under Oliver Bulleid's design. Designed as an express passenger locomotive, this 4-6-2 Light Pacific is powered by three 16.375″ x 24″ cylinders driving 6′ 2″ driving wheels operating with a boiler pressure of 250 psi, generating 31,000 lbf of starting tractive effort and over 2,000 horsepower. Turned out in BR lined maroon livery, 34092 acts as the rear banking locomotive running tender-first, providing powerful rear-end assistance up the bank.

HAULED STOCK: 5 BR Lined Maroon Mark 1 Coaches & L&YR Directors' Saloon 'Belle Isle'
Forming a 6-carriage vintage passenger rake on the East Lancashire Railway, the coaches are marshalled directly between tender-first leading S15 No. 30506 and tender-first rear banking Light Pacific No. 34092 City of Wells. Directly behind the tender of No. 30506 is BR Mark 1 TSO No. M4895 in lined BR maroon, built in 1959 (67 years old) at BR Doncaster Works in South Yorkshire. Following M4895 in order are four additional lined maroon BR Mark 1 coaches: Tourist Second Open (TSO) No. M5031, built in 1962 (64 years old) at BR Doncaster Works in South Yorkshire; Corridor Brake Second (BSK) No. M35455, built in 1963 (63 years old) at BR Wolverhampton Works in the West Midlands; Tourist Second Open (TSO) No. M4928, built in 1962 (64 years old) at BR Doncaster Works in South Yorkshire; and Tourist Second Open (TSO) No. E4992, built in 1962 (64 years old) at BR Doncaster Works in South Yorkshire. Positioned at the rear of the rake, marshalled directly in front of banking locomotive 34092, is the historic Lancashire & Yorkshire Railway (L&YR) Directors' Saloon No. 1 Belle Isle, built in 1906 (120 years old) at Horwich Works in Lancashire.

Spectacular Wet-Weather Tender-First Ascent Up the 'Ski Slope'
Captured in 8K 16:9 widescreen on a rainy, steamy autumn afternoon on Friday, 16th of October 2026 at 14:31, SR S15 No. 30506 and rear-banking Light Pacific No. 34092 City of Wells work a heavy 6-coach gala working departing south from Bury Bolton Street station. Operating during the East Lancashire Railway Autumn Steam Gala, both Southern Railway locomotives run tender-first, delivering an exceptional and unrepeatable display of heavy steam power.

Passing the southern junction beyond Bury station, the train tackles the infamous "ski slope"—the steep gradient climbing out of the station layout. Steaming heavily in the pouring rain with tenders leading, banking locomotive 34092 works hard directly behind the Belle Isle Directors' Saloon, blasting massive clouds of white steam and dark exhaust into the damp sky. Working in unison with tender-first lead engine S15 No. 30506, the two locomotives power the heavy rake up the steep incline, delivering a dramatic, steam-filled spectacle as they accelerate away in the wet autumn weather.
