Swinton – From the Platform in the 1990s | British Rail Archive Footage 1994–1996
The first visit, in October 1994, captures a railway scene still dominated by a fascinating mix of everyday passenger and freight workings. From Pacer units and HSTs to Class 47s and Class 56s, there's plenty of variety to be seen as trains pass through the station.
Returning in July 1996, this time under much better weather conditions, provides an interesting opportunity to compare the scene and see what has changed. Some familiar faces remain, with Class 47s and Class 56s continuing to feature prominently, alongside a welcome appearance from a Class 37.
There is also a relative newcomer to the Swinton scene in the form of a Loadhaul-liveried Class 60, reflecting the changing identities and liveries of Britain's freight railway during this period.
Two visits, separated by nearly two years, offer a snapshot of everyday railway activity during an interesting period of transition – a little piece of mid-1990s railway history, filmed from the platform.
