7029 'Clun Castle' arrives at the Severn Valley on 'The Volunteer' tour before a loco swap with 4150

An afternoon at the Severn Valley Railway today for a special arrival of 'The Volunteer' special train commemorating 75 years of heritage railways in the UK.

The train was a joint venture between Heritage Railway Association, Vintage Trains and Severn Valley Railway, and saw the Tyseley based Castle 7029 'Clun Castle' working unassisted bringing the excursion from Birmingham Snow Hill to Stratford-Upon-Avon, then up to Kidderminster where the shunter 13201 dragged the stock back into the SVR platform while Clun backed down to water with its support coach. 'Clun Castle' last visited the Severn Valley Railway in 1985 so this was a poignant return and a chance to reflect on how far preservation movements across the UK have come over the decades.

GWR Large Prairie 4150 deputised for failed BR Standard 75069, to relieve the Castle for the Severn Valley Railway section of the tour up to Bridgnorth, while the Castle took a spin on the turntable at Kidderminster before being serviced.

Ast the dark night drew in and the light faded, 4150 returned the tour back along the SVR and is seen passing through Bewdley creating an atmospheric scene, before swapping with 7029 at Kidderminster and the final scenes show the railtour working into Kidderminster Mainline station before setting off back into the night to Birmingham Snow Hill.

Great to see 'Clun Castle' making a rare appearance on a heritage railway today and also worth stating in regards to Stanier Mogul 13268, although originally earmarked for a mainline return this month this has now been delayed as thr locomotive is not quite ready, so sadly the tour on 8th November will not be worked by the Mogul, but instead by either 7029 'Clun Castle' or 5043 'Earl of Mount Edgcumbe'. | 02.11.2026
