British Rail Class 86

The British Rail Class 86 is a class of 25 kV AC electric locomotive built for British Rail in the mid-1960s as part of the modernisation and expansion of electric traction on the West Coast Main Line (WCML). Background and development

The Class 86 emerged from British Rail's programme to electrify the WCML and replace steam traction with modern electric locomotives. Earlier classes, later known as Classes 81 to 85, had effectively been pre-production and development types, each with differing equipment and design details. British Rail required a more standard machine that could be built in larger numbers and used across the electrified network with fewer maintenance and operational complications.

Under the earlier classification system, the class was designated AL6, indicating the sixth AC locomotive design. The locomotives were numbered E3101 to E3200 when built. Following the introduction of TOPS, they were renumbered within the Class 86 series. This transition from AL6 to Class 86 mirrors a broader shift in British Rail's technical and administrative systems during the late 1960s and 1970s.

Construction was split between British Rail Doncaster Works and English Electric at Vulcan Foundry, reflecting both domestic manufacturing capacity and the strategic importance of the WCML electrification programme. Design and technical characteristics

The Class 86 is a Bo-Bo electric locomotive, with four powered axles arranged on two bogies. It was designed for operation from 25 kV AC overhead electrification, collecting current by pantograph. In broad terms, the locomotives were intended as mixed-traffic machines capable of handling both passenger and freight duties, although individual subclasses and modifications later produced more specialised roles.

A defining feature of the class in its early years was the issue of ride quality and track forces at speed. The original suspension arrangement, combined with axle-hung traction motors, resulted in rough riding and concerns about track wear. This was a serious problem for a class intended for high-speed line use. British Rail therefore undertook a programme of modifications, including improved suspension arrangements based on successful testing.

These modifications led to the creation of different subclasses. In simplified terms, some locomotives retained lower-speed limitations and were increasingly used on freight or slower duties, while others were upgraded and remained suitable for faster passenger work. This subclassing became an important part of Class 86 operations, particularly as the network and rolling stock fleet evolved.

The class was also adapted over time for changes in train heating, control systems and operational requirements. Some locomotives were fitted for push-pull and TDM (Time Division Multiplex) working, which made them suitable for particular passenger services and later charter or specialist roles. As with many long-lived BR-era locomotives, the Class 86 was not static in design. It changed incrementally across its life in response to technical, commercial and operational pressures.

Early service and West Coast Main Line operations

Class 86 locomotives entered service during a period of major change on British Rail. The electrification of the WCML transformed inter-city and freight operations between London, the Midlands, North West England and Scotland. The Class 86 quickly became one of the core electric locomotive types on this network.

In the late 1960s and 1970s, the class worked a broad range of traffic. Passenger duties included principal WCML services as well as secondary passenger work within the electrified area. Freight duties included liner trains, parcels and other electrically hauled traffic where route electrification and locomotive availability permitted. This mixed-traffic flexibility was central to the class's value.

The class also played a role in the broader withdrawal of steam on BR. While it was only one part of a much larger modernisation process, its introduction in quantity helped support the transition to modern traction on key electrified routes. In this respect, the Class 86 is historically significant not simply as a successful locomotive class, but as part of the final stage of steam replacement on a major trunk corridor.

Suspension modifications and subclass development

The best-known technical issue in the class's early history was the rough riding caused by the original suspension and motor arrangement. British Rail undertook trials and modifications, and the results of these programmes gradually reshaped the fleet into a set of operational subclasses.

This was not unusual for early AC electric classes, many of which evolved significantly after introduction. However, the Class 86 is a particularly clear example because the subclass distinctions affected operating speed, route use and the division between passenger and freight work. Locomotives with improved suspension were retained for higher-speed duties, while others were effectively relegated to slower work.

Over time, the class included subtypes such as 86/0, 86/2, 86/3, 86/4 and later freight-focused 86/6 designations, among others. These subclass numbers reflected differences in equipment, braking, train heating and control systems as much as pure mechanical changes. For operators and enthusiasts, subclass identity became an important part of understanding which locomotives could work which diagrams.

British Rail sector era and changing roles

During the sectorisation era of British Rail, Class 86s could be seen in a variety of liveries and operating contexts. They appeared in InterCity, Railfreight, Rail Express Systems and, in at least one notable case, Network SouthEast colours. This reflects the flexibility of the class and the fragmented but still centrally managed structure of BR in its later years.

In passenger service, the class remained associated with WCML electric haulage even as newer classes, particularly the Class 87, became strongly linked with top-link express work. The Class 86 still handled substantial passenger mileage and was a familiar sight on many services. In freight use, the class was increasingly valuable on electrically hauled flows, including intermodal and parcels traffic, especially where route electrification and traffic density justified electric traction.

Some Class 86s also later worked on the Great Eastern Main Line (GEML) after electrification changes north of Colchester. This gave the class a second major geographical association beyond the WCML and prolonged its passenger career in East Anglia, especially on Norwich services in push-pull formations with coaching stock and DBSOs.

Privatisation and operator diversity

Rail privatisation transformed the Class 86 from a standard BR fleet into a distributed asset used by multiple passenger and freight operators. This era arguably gave the class one of the most varied chapters in its career.

Operators associated with Class 86s in the privatised era included Virgin Trains, Virgin CrossCountry, Anglia Railways, one, Freightliner, EWS, Network Rail, Caledonian Sleeper, Colas Rail and various charter or spot-hire arrangements. Not every operator used large numbers or for long periods, but the list illustrates how widely the class was redeployed after the break-up of BR.

Under Anglia Railways, and later one, Class 86s became closely associated with London Liverpool Street to Norwich passenger services. These trains often operated in push-pull formations and helped preserve locomotive-hauled inter-city travel in East Anglia into the 2000s, after many other routes had converted to multiple units.

Freightliner operated a substantial fleet of freight-focused examples, especially on intermodal traffic over the northern WCML. Double-heading was often used on demanding flows. EWS inherited examples through the parcels business and used them on mail, charter and hired passenger duties before gradual withdrawal. The class's role in privatisation-era railway operations was therefore not a simple decline but a diversification followed by a gradual contraction.

Freightliner and the final regular freight years

Freightliner operation is an especially important part of the Class 86 story because it sustained regular frontline work long after many passenger diagrams had disappeared. Freightliner inherited a significant number of locomotives, particularly the freight-oriented 86/6 subclass, and used them on intermodal and container traffic, much of it on the electrified WCML.

These duties suited the locomotives' capability, but changing traffic patterns, fleet rationalisation and the introduction of newer traction eventually reduced the role of the class. Even so, Class 86s remained in regular freight use much longer than many observers expected. A few locomotives continued in service into the 2020s, making the class one of the longest-lived BR electric locomotive types in practical frontline operation.

The final years also saw some locomotives pass through specialist ownership and spot-hire arrangements, and some examples were rebuilt or renumbered for infrastructure or departmental use. This end-of-life complexity is typical of long-lived UK locomotive classes, where a straightforward withdrawal date often masks a prolonged period of secondary use.

Export and international second careers

A notable part of the Class 86 story is the export of many locomotives after withdrawal from UK service. A substantial number were exported to Bulgaria and Hungary, where they received further use after overhaul and adaptation. This extended the commercial life of locomotives that might otherwise have been scrapped in Britain.

Export was encouraged by several factors. The Class 86 was a proven 25 kV AC design, mechanically and electrically substantial, and available in quantity. Although ageing by UK standards, it remained attractive where the economics of refurbishment and reuse made sense. In this respect, the class followed a pattern seen with some other BR electric locomotives, but on a notable scale.

The export story also complicates simple narratives of withdrawal. While regular UK operation largely came to an end by 2021, the type itself did not disappear. Instead, parts of the fleet entered a new chapter abroad, continuing the operational history of a mid-1960s British design into the twenty-first century.

Preservation and the AC Locomotive Group

The Class 86 has also entered preservation, though in relatively small numbers compared with the total class size. Preserving a main line electric locomotive presents particular challenges, including secure storage, specialist maintenance, component supply and the limited ability to operate under live overhead electrification on most heritage railways.

The best-known preservation organisation connected with the class is the AC Locomotive Group (ACLG), the UK's dedicated AC electric locomotive preservation society. ACLG has preserved and operated 86401, which is historically significant as the first Class 86 to be preserved. The locomotive has also been notable for later main line and charter-related use, and for its earlier fame as the only class member to carry Network SouthEast livery in BR service.

The preservation story of 86101 is also important, as it became associated with charter work and later Caledonian Sleeper stock moves. 86259 has likewise remained active in preservation and charter circles under private ownership. Together, these locomotives ensure that the Class 86 remains represented not only statically but also, at times, operationally.

Preservation of the class matters because the Class 86 was central to standard AC electric traction in Britain. It represents the maturing of WCML electrification, the mixed-traffic electric era, the BR sector period, and the fragmented but often inventive operator landscape of privatisation. Without preserved examples, that long and varied history would be much harder to interpret.

Liveries, names and enthusiast appeal

Few BR electric locomotive classes accumulated as broad a range of liveries as the Class 86. Over its life, the class appeared in plain BR green and blue, InterCity schemes, Railfreight and Rail Express Systems colours, Anglia Railways turquoise, Virgin branding, Freightliner green, EWS red and gold, Network Rail yellow, Caledonian Sleeper blue and several charter or special liveries.

Many locomotives also carried names, adding to the class's enthusiast profile. Names covered a wide range of themes, including places, institutions and commemorative subjects. These names, combined with the variety of liveries and long service life, helped make individual Class 86 locomotives highly recognisable.

Enthusiast interest has also been shaped by the class's transitional character. It was modern enough to survive deep into the privatisation era, but old enough to remain strongly associated with classic BR electric locomotive operation. For many observers, the Class 86 represents the era of locomotive-hauled electric services before multiple units became dominant on most inter-city and regional electrified routes.

Accidents and incidents

Like any large and long-lived class, the Class 86 was involved in several accidents and incidents across its working life. These included serious collisions and derailments in the 1970s and 1980s, as well as more routine failures and damage incidents. The class's long period of frontline service across heavily used routes meant that exposure to operational risk was substantial.

From a historical standpoint, the accident record is part of the class story but not its defining feature. More significant is the fact that the class remained in use, was modified, and continued to evolve after major incidents and technical criticism. This resilience, both technical and organisational, is one reason the class endured for so long.

Legacy

The British Rail Class 86 occupies an important place in British railway history. It was the first truly large-scale standard AC electric locomotive class on the WCML, and it became a long-lived and adaptable fleet that worked in almost every major phase of modern railway operation from the 1960s onward.
