How to use this directory

A train class groups vehicles of a related design; each individual vehicle has its own number. Open a class to see its vehicle entries, details and linked videos. “British Rail” refers to the historical organisation, while this directory also covers later British railway stock.

Stock type describes what a vehicle is; traction describes its power source. Where a classification has not been checked, it is left unlabelled or marked as not recorded. “Indexed videos” counts distinct public videos associated with vehicles in a class. An association may come from video metadata or indexing work and is not, by itself, visual confirmation that the stock appears on screen. It is not a fleet size or a measure of current activity.
